FAQ

Q. My child has never played golf before. Would the WNCJGA be a good place for them to learn?
A. No, the WNCJGA 's mission is to provide a competitive arena for tournament play for juniors that have already developed basic ball striking skills. It would be best to seek instruction from a qualified PGA or LPGA instructor in your area. Many courses and driving ranges do offer affordable group instruction in addition to private instruction for your child. If you need help in finding a source close to your home, please notify our office and we will be happy to refer you to a local facility.

Q. My child will be new to the WNCJGA but is not available for the skills and rules test. Can they still play without taking the tests?
A. The skills test can be waived providing you have your local professional send a letter to the office stating that your child has the basic swing skills that will enable them to be competitive in either the JV or Varsity division. The rules exam is a take home exam that all members must take and pass before participating in any of our events. There are no exceptions and no waivers for the rules exam.

Q. How do I know if my child should be registering for the Junior Varsity or Varsity division? Is it determined by age or skill level?
A. There are few requirements for the Junior Varsity . One, your child must pass the basic skills test or have a written statement from a PGA or LPGA professional stating the playing ability of your child and you must also present 3 attested scores from play supporting the scoring level. The Varsity division requires that the junior shoot no worse than 15 over par for 9 holes at a recognized golf course. The Varsity division is not limited by age, rather by score. See our age division break downs for your child's correct placement.

Q. Does my child need to enter every tournament?
A. No, you may sign up for as many as you are available to participate in.

Q. Can I accompany my child during the tournaments?
A. We do ENCOURAGE our parents to act as volunteers, especially for JV events, and if acting as scorers we will try to place them in the group ahead or behind their child's. You may enjoy the play from a distance and we gain a volunteer! Any other pure spectators are to remain on cart paths, unless assisting in hunting for lost balls, either half a hole ahead or half a hole behind their child. There is to be absolutely no coaching by a parent to their child or any other participant. All groups have an adult accompanying them to assist in scoring even though the junior is ultimately responsible for their posted score.

Q. How far in advance do I need to register for each event?
A. Please register as soon as possible for all events in which you know your child can participate. If you find that you can add other events at a later time, that is allowed. The cut off for all events is 2 days prior to the event. If you have not paid in advance for an event, payment has to be made before the child tees off or they can not play in that event. Due to bookkeeping requirements, we do request that events are paid for by check. Cash is too difficult to keep up with.

Q. What are the tournament entry fees and are they refundable?
A. Fees for Junior Varsity are $10 each and Varsity $20 each unless otherwise noted and are not refundable for any reason. If you have a financial hardship, we do have special assistance money available. Our goal is for all children to have the opportunity to play regardless of money.

Q. How do I find out my tee time?
A. Tee times will be available on the junior golf line after 8:00pm, the night before each event. Please call 828-891-9363 and follow the prompts. Please be sure to check in with the starter 30 minutes before your tee time.
